A-Level

An introduction to A-Level studies

Your journey for university begins here
The A-level (Advanced Level) is a subject-based qualification conferred as part of the General Certificate of Education. The A-level permits students to have potential access to university if their grade is of satisfactory quality.

Obtaining an A-level, or equivalent qualifications, is generally required across the board for university entrance, with universities granting offers based on grades achieved.

Which abilities you develop during A-Level?
Following a Cambridge International AS & A-Level programme helps students develop abilities which universities value highly, including:

  • a deep understanding of their subjects
  • higher order thinking skills – analysis, critical thinking, problem solving
  • presenting ordered and coherent arguments
  • independent learning and research

Navigating the educational journey’s duration
A-levels are typically worked towards over two years. Normally, students take three or four A-level courses in their first year. This is because university offers are normally based on three A-level grades.

Flexibility in education
Unlike other level-3 qualifications, such as the International Baccalaureate (IB), A-levels have no specific subject requirements, so students can combine any subjects they wish to take. However, students normally pick their courses based on the degree they wish to pursue at university: most degrees require specific A-levels for entry.

Structure and significance of A-level
A-levels are split into two parts, with students within their first year of study pursuing an Advanced Subsidiary qualification, commonly referred to as an AS or AS-level, which can either serve as an independent qualification or contribute 40% of the marks towards a full A-level award. The second part is known as an A2 or A2-level, which is generally more in-depth and academically rigorous than the AS. The AS and A2 marks are combined for a full A-level award.

Global gateways
In Malaysia, the A-level qualification is offered, with examinations conducted by Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). Every year thousands of students with Cambridge International AS & A Levels gain places at leading universities worldwide. These qualifications are valued by top universities around the world including those in the UK, US (including Ivy League universities), Europe, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

A-Levels at Ideas International

The Ideas International A Levels Program, offered in partnership with Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE), not only propels students towards prestigious universities but also equips them with a comprehensive toolkit to make a meaningful impact on the world. With a focus on fostering leaders who drive change, our program stands as a transformative journey from secondary education to a life of purpose and influence.

New Horizons For A-Levels

At Ideas International, we believe in empowering students for the journey ahead. Our 18 - 24 month A Levels experience goes beyond traditional academics to encompass the development of essential Human Skills, Life Skills, and Physical Education (PE). These critical components complement the academic curriculum and are designed to shape well-rounded individuals who are not only intellectually adept but also emotionally intelligent, adaptable, and physically healthy.

As part of our holistic approach, students begin their journey with the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level, immersing themselves in a minimum of 3 or a maximum of 4 subjects. They then advance to the Advanced Levels (A2) stage. For those with aspirations of entering and excelling at distinguished institutions, we highly recommend pursuing 4 subjects.

An Overview of Our A-Levels Program and Examination Schedule

Our meticulously crafted timetable ensures that each week offers 5 hours of dedicated classroom interaction per subject, which includes 1 hour of tutorials per week. The pinnacle of our A Levels program is marked by the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and Advanced Level (A2) examinations, meticulously aligned with the annual CAIE assessment schedule in October/November.

Our Commitment For Optimal Learning: Our Class Sizes

Ideas International maintains intimate class sizes of fewer than 20 students per class. This enables us to offer personalised mentorship, cultivating not only academic prowess but also the vital life skills and leadership attributes required for success.

There is no uniform for A Level students. Yet we require students to adhere to our student policies which include clothing guidelines.

All students are required to attend Human skills, Life Skills, PE Classes and do a minimum of 1 hour (average) of community work per week which may include internal or external activities such as: teaching, reading, running the library, sports, etc.

Our A Levels program is taught by a diverse and accomplished team comprising both local and international educators. The school takes pride in its selection of highly experienced and qualified academics who bring a wealth of knowledge to the classroom, ensuring an enriching learning experience for all students.

5 credits in SPM, IGCSE, O Levels, or the equivalent. Students who do not meet the academic requirement for entry may be accepted conditionally. These conditions will be determined by the Board of Governors. Malaysian students who have given their SPM examinations are welcome to apply to our A-level programme. To facilitate the learning experience, it is advisable for prospective candidates to have achieved a score of 50% in English.

International Project Qualification

At Ideas International, we take immense pride in offering our students an exceptional educational experience that goes beyond the conventional. In addition to our esteemed A Levels programs, we are thrilled to present the International Project Qualification (IPQ) in collaboration with Nottingham University. This unique offering is an integral part of the Cambridge Advanced program of study, designed to foster skills-based learning and cultivate versatile abilities that are highly regarded by university admissions departments worldwide.

The IPQ is a project-based qualification that empowers students to develop and refine cross-curricular competencies. This dynamic approach requires students to embark on a journey of exploration and discovery as they delve into a topic of their choosing. By planning, conducting thorough research, and presenting their findings, students not only expand their skill set but also deepen their understanding of their chosen subject matter.

One of the hallmarks of the IPQ is its focus on engagement and practical skill development. Students are encouraged to select a topic that resonates with their interests, complementing their Cambridge International AS or A Levels or reflecting broader areas of curiosity. They meticulously craft a research question that forms the backbone of their investigation, conducting research and meticulously documenting their progress in a dedicated research log. At the heart of the Cambridge IPQ lies a commitment to excellence. All projects are subject to external assessment, with evaluation conducted by Cambridge examiners who uphold the highest standards of academic rigour.

The assessment objectives (AOs) are structured to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of the student's work.

AO1: Research, Analysis, and Evaluation (70%)

This objective underscores the student's capacity to conduct robust research, critically analyse information, and provide well-reasoned evaluations.

AO2: Reflection (15%)

Here, the student's ability to reflect on their research process, insights gained, and lessons learned is evaluated, emphasising personal growth and introspection.

AO3: Communication (15%):

Effective communication is paramount. This objective assesses the student's aptitude to clearly and persuasively convey their findings, demonstrating refined communication skills.

The International Project Qualification at Ideas International serves as a gateway to not only academic accomplishment but also holistic development. It equips students with the tools to undertake research, communicate effectively, and think critically - attributes that not only enrich their educational journey but also prepare them for success in their future university studies and beyond.

Guided by professors of Nottingham University as well as our A Level team, students receive dual support from two teacher advisors throughout the research process. A project supervisor, often a subject expert, offers guidance on methods, answers subject-specific queries, and ensures steady progress. Regular meetings with the project supervisor serve as progress checkpoints.

In addition, students are matched with a skills teacher. With weekly timetabled sessions, these teachers nurture core competencies such as research techniques, planning, time management, source evaluation, report writing, and academic integrity.

Our approach goes beyond academia. Universities value research experience, and employers appreciate qualities like independent thought, analytical skills, and project management ability. The International Project Qualification at Ideas International, in collaboration with Nottingham University, equips students with a skill set that not only enriches academia but also empowers them to excel in diverse ventures.
